Civil War Union Navy Personnel Data Sources

The following is a list of the published and unpublished sources of data on Navy personnel from which our database and Index thereto have been compiled.

The Official Records of the Union and Confederate Navies in the Civil War 1861-1865: As of this date, only Volumes 4-8 and 20-26 have been fully indexed.
Register of the Commissioned, Warrant and Volunteer Officers of the Navy of the United States and Officers of the Marine Corps To September 1, 1862: Does not list most Volunteer Officers serving in the Western Gunboat Flotilla.
Register of the Commissioned, Warrant and Volunteer Officers of the Navy of the United States and Officers of the Marine Corps To January 1, 1863: Includes most Volunteer Officers of the newly-designated Mississippi Squadron.

Database of Illinois pre-war residents who served in the Union Navy: Includes multiple entries for the same individual due to surname spelling variations.
Illinois Roll of Honor: Database of burials of Union Naval Veterans in Illinois.
Illinois Soldiers & Sailor's Home: Database of post-war residents who served in the Navy, includes multiple entries for the same individual due to surname spelling variations and multiple periods of residency.
Roster of Maryland Volunteers: Includes many individuals (mostly escaped slaves) who enlisted from southern states but were accredited to Maryland.
Index to Naval Rendezvous Reports 1861-1865: Microfilm series containing images of index cards arranged by surname/given name -- only a fraction of the data on these microfilms is included in our database.
General Index to Pension Applications: Microfilm series containing images of index cards arranged by surname/given name -- only a fraction of the data on these microfilms is included in our database.
Ship's Rosters and Deck Logs: Some copies in our possession and many published online -- sources too numerous to list.
National Cemetery Interrments: Data provided by the Veteran's Administration.
Medal of Honor Recipients: List of recipients of the Congressional Medal of Honor for deeds performed during the Civil War.
Diaries, Letters and Documents: In our possession, published online or shown on items offered on eBay.
